Trail clean up in the Greenbrier State Forest

Dec 7, 2023 | Events, News

In the heart of the Greenbrier State Forest, a dedicated group of GVORBA members gathered on August 20, 2023, for a historic event — the organization’s first-ever trail maintenance day. With a shared passion for trails and a commitment to preserving the natural beauty of our beloved community, more than a dozen volunteers convened to breathe new life into the well-loved trail, “Figure Eight.”

This trail, once a haven for nature enthusiasts and bikers, had seen better days. Overgrown bushes and debris had taken their toll, making it a bit challenging for both walkers and bikers. But armed with determination and a shared vision for a vibrant trail system, the GVORBA team set out to revitalize “Figure Eight.”

Over the course of four hours, the dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly, clearing debris, cutting back overgrown bushes, and transforming the trail into a more accessible and enjoyable path for everyone. The impact was not only visible but tangible — a testament to the power of community when united by a common goal.

“Figure Eight” holds special significance for many GVORBA members as it is a trail frequently used to introduce new riders to the joys of mountain biking, especially those involved with the Hellbenders, a team that many GVORBA members proudly belong to. The trail maintenance efforts were not just about clearing a path; they were about ensuring that the Hellbenders and future generations of riders have a safe and enjoyable space to learn and explore.

The immediate acknowledgment and appreciation from the Hellbenders team that week spoke volumes. It wasn’t just a cleaned-up trail; it was a reaffirmation of our commitment to maintaining the Greenbrier State Forest trails and fostering a thriving outdoor community.

As the sun set on that August day, it marked the beginning of a new chapter for GVORBA — a chapter dedicated to preserving the beauty of our trails, promoting outdoor recreation, and leaving a lasting legacy for the generations of riders yet to come. The first trail maintenance day was not just an event; it was a celebration of our shared love for the trails and a promise to keep them alive and thriving. Stay tuned for more trail adventures and community initiatives as we continue to pave the way for a greener, healthier, and more connected Greenbrier Valley.
